Quantum-accelerated optimisation identifies the fastest, most cost-effective ways to plan, install, and extend fixed and mobile broadband networks. At a scale and complexity classical alone can’t match.

Modelling a network that spans the world

Vodafone is assessing ORCA's quantum technology for optical fiber cable design first, ahead of wider use across its global network — including its undersea cable system and new direct-to-mobile satellite service.

Finding the shortest network

Telcos use the Steiner tree problem to find the shortest network connecting a set of points. It is used to plan the most cost-efficient way to extend connectivity. At a joint UK government and industry QTAP event, Vodafone used the ORCA PT-2 quantum computer to solve one such problem in minutes.

Minutes to solve a problem that would otherwise take hours on classical computers

The network planning bottleneck

Networks keep growing. So does demand for new digital services. Classical methods for planning fixed and mobile broadband are reaching their limits. Planning, installing, and optimising large-scale networks is a harder problem than classical compute can solve quickly.

02

Why quantum?

Some network problems are especially hard to solve exactly. One example is the Steiner Tree Problem — finding the shortest possible network of connections between a set of points. It is used to work out the most cost-efficient way to extend connectivity. A photonic quantum computer can solve it in minutes. Classical computers can take hours, weeks or even years.

The value ORCA Computing delivers

ORCA's photonic quantum runs alongside your existing software. It generates solutions that reduce total cable length and helps optimize where mobile base stations go.

What the industry has to say

“Our work with ORCA Computing aims to solve ultra-complex problems which otherwise would take many hours, weeks and even years to process on today’s classical computers. Modelling new networks that maximize speed, reliability and coverage for customers, while navigating urban clutter and rural obstacles, could in future take minutes.”

Luke Ibbetson, Head of Research & Development, Vodafone

“ORCA Computing’s continued collaboration with the Vodafone team marks an important step toward achieving practical and commercial quantum advantage. We have shown that quantum acceleration of telecommunications use cases is not just a theoretical concept, it’s a viable, deployable and commercially compelling solution.”

James Fletcher, Head of Solutions Architecture, ORCA Computing
