MAKING QUANTUM COMPUTING
A PRACTICAL REALITY
Headquartered in London, UK, with offices in Toronto (Canada) and Austin (US), we develop and provide full-stack photonic quantum computing systems to address applications of scientific and economic importance. Founded in 2019 as a spin-out of the University of Oxford, ORCA leverages over 30 years of scientific research and technology breakthroughs by Co-founder Professor Ian Walmsley. The company was established to deliver a completely new approach towards photonic quantum computing.
Since our founding, the company has enjoyed numerous achievements including leading a record £11.6 million Quantum Data Centre of the Future grant from the UK government and delivering 10 on-premises quantum photonic system to customers around the world by early 2025. Customers such as the UK Ministry of Defence (UK), National Quantum Computing Centre (UK), Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (Poland) and Montana State University (US) have placed their trust in us to advance their quantum technologies progress.

Our belief is that hands-on development by domain experts in industry and research is key to harnessing the ultimate value of quantum in the years to come. By applying our unique technologies to immediate applications such as generative AI, machine learning and optimisation as well as maintaining a view towards error corrected systems in the long-term, we aim to unlock new fields of applications, accelerate innovation and help transform industries.
A REIMAGINED PATH TO FAULT TOLERANCE
We believe fault tolerance is crucial for achieving large-scale general-purpose quantum computing. However, exclusively focussing on that as a goal is both commercially challenging and ignores the interesting opportunities for quantum today. With ORCA’s systems, you can have both: exploring both immediate application uses as well as pursuing a roadmap for the future. This provides continuity for organisations seeking to get to fault tolerance but who also want to ensure they don’t miss anything along the way.
SIMULATION
- Suitable for small-scale problems, a software simulator is the starting point for many organisations as they first explore the potential of quantum computing.
- ORCA’s state-of-the-art simulator is available through the ORCA SDK.
QUANTUM
ACCELERATOR
- Quantum accelerators will provide benefits to organisations in the near-term.
- The ORCA PT Series uses programmable boson sampling to work as an accelerator, or co-processor, alongside existing classical resources for machine learning and variational algorithms.

- Convergence of ORCA’s multiplexing and memory technologies in a gate-based system capable of performing standard computation using qubits.
